first edition. Schoolcraft was commissioned by Congress in 1846 to write a definitive book on the American Indians. He compiled this series of detailed questions and had them sent to scholars and Indian agents across the country. The responses helped shape his 1851 master work, Historical and Statistical Information Respecting . . . the Indian Tribes.
